On Thermonuclear Micro-Bomb Propulsion for Fast Interplanetary Missions

چکیده

To reduce the radiation hazard for manned missions to Mars and beyond, a high specific impulse-high thrust system is needed, with a nuclear bomb propulsion system the preferred candidate. The propulsion with small fission bombs is excluded because the critical mass requirement leads to extravagant small fission burn up rates. This leaves open the propulsion with non-fission ignited thermonuclear micro-explosions, with a compact fusion micro-explosion igniter (driver), and no large radiator. It should not depend on the rare He 3 isotope, and only require a small amount of tritium. This excludes lasers for ignition. With multi-mega-amperegigavolt proton beams and a small amount of tritium, cylindrical deuterium targets can be ignited. The proton beams are generated by discharging the entire spacecraft as a magnetically insulated gigavolt capacitor. To avoid a large radiator, needed to remove the heat from the absorption of the fast neutrons in the spacecraft, the micro-explosion is surrounded by a thick layer of liquid hydrogen, stopping the neutrons and heating the hydrogen to a temperature of ~ 10 5 K, which as a fully ionized plasma can be repelled from the spacecraft by a magnetic mirror.

Ion Thruster Plume Plasma Interactions in the Solar Wind

Ion propulsion will be used for the first time on an interplanetary spacecraft, Deep Space One (DS1), scheduled for launch in July 1998. A primary objective of New Millennium DS 1 is to flight validate solar electric propulsion (SEP) for interplanetary missions. The cruise phase of the mission will characterize the life and performance of a 30 cm xenon ion thruster and determine how its operati...

Magnetically-Channeled SIEC Array (MCSA) Fusion Device for Interplanetary Missions

A radical new Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) concept, the Magnetically-Channeled Spherical-IEC Array (MCSA) fusion propulsion system, was proposed earlier for use in the high performance Space Ship II fusion propulsion ship (Burton, 2003). This ship was designed for a fast manned round trip mission to Jupiter. The MCSA fusion power plant represents a key enabling technology needed for...

Thermonuclear Operation Space Lift

The “Project Orion” small fission bomb propulsion concept proposed the one-stage launching of large payloads into low earth orbit, but it was abandoned because of the radioactive fallout into the earth atmosphere. The idea is here revived by the replacement of the small fission bombs with pure deuterium-tritium fusion bombs, and the pusher plate of the Project Orion with a large magnetic mirror...

A novel design of MEMS based solid propellant

As the development of small satellites, more commonly referred to as ‘microsats’ with masses in the range of 10-100 kg and ‘nanosats’ featuring masses from 1-10 kg, there emerge several new kinds of space missions, such as the formation flying and constellations of micro satellites, distributed onboard carrier wave radar, high resolution synthetic aperture remote sensing etc. Due to the continu...

Performance testing of a microfabricated propulsion system for nanosatellite applications

There is a growing interest in the use of micro and nanosatellites within the aerospace community. Constellations of small satellites may eventually replace much larger, single function spacecraft as a cheaper, more flexible alternative. Micro-technologies will be required to enable small satellite missions including efficient, low-cost propulsion systems for maneuvering. A MEMS fabricated prop...
